The plinth is the strip between cabinet and floor, and the only part of the kitchen that takes mop water every day.

Short answer: Choose an aluminium or PVC plinth if the floor is mopped daily, because neither absorbs water. In our HSR Layout kitchen table a 100 mm anodised aluminium plinth is Rs 240 per running foot in 2026, or Rs 5,280 for a 22 ft run. Plywood plinths fail through bare cut edges and cabinets built on the floor, not through the plywood grade alone. Send us your kitchen plan and we will mark every plinth length.

Which Kitchen Plinth Material Survives Mop Water: Aluminium, PVC or Laminated Board?

The plinth is the 100 mm strip that hides the legs under your base cabinets. It is the one part of a kitchen that meets floor water every day, from mopping, a leaking dishwasher hose or an overflowing bucket. That is why a kitchen that looks perfect for two years can show swollen, lifting laminate at the bottom edge after one wet monsoon.

Aluminium wins on water behaviour because there is nothing to absorb. PVC board comes close, with one caveat: Metal and More, writing in June 2026, notes that a peeled foil exposes the foam core to moisture. Laminated plywood is the option that fails when edges are exposed, because laminate protects the faces but not the cut edges. The table sets the four options side by side.

Kitchen plinth materials compared for water, Bengaluru 2026
Plinth materialWhat water does to itKnown weak pointPrice evidence
Anodised aluminium profile, 100 mmNothing. Metal does not absorb water or swell.Cut ends need caps and neat corner joints.Rs 240 per running foot in our HSR Layout kitchen table
PVC or foam PVC boardThe core does not absorb water, but a peeled foil exposes it (Metal and More, June 2026).Softens near sustained heat and holds screws less well than plywood (Greenply, June 2026).No plinth rate is published. Whole PVC kitchens run Rs 650 to Rs 1,100 per sq ft (Metal and More) and Rs 800 to Rs 1,400 for full PVC (Greenply).
BWP plywood with laminateHandles prolonged water in the board, as long as laminate and edge seal stay intact.Cut edges and the bottom edge stay exposed unless sealed.BWP carcass with acrylic shutters runs Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 per sq ft for the whole kitchen (Greenply).
BWR or MR plywood, MDF or particle board with laminateBWR tolerates humidity and minor moisture but not prolonged contact (Greenply, April 2026). MR and board types are weaker still. The first mop splash that gets past the laminate edge.Lowest-grade option for a wet zone, so avoid it for the plinth.

The price column is honest about what is published. Our own number is the aluminium line from the HSR Layout kitchen table on our HSR Layout kitchen guide. For PVC and plywood, I could find only whole-kitchen rates per sq ft, which are a different measure from a plinth strip, so I have not converted them into a per-foot plinth price.

My observation: homeowners compare shutter finishes for weeks and approve the plinth in one line. The plinth takes more water than any shutter and gets the least attention.

  • Aluminium 100 mm plinth: Rs 240 per running foot in our HSR Layout table, Rs 5,280 for 22 ft.
  • BWR plywood tolerates humidity and minor moisture but not prolonged water contact (Greenply, April 2026), so it is the wrong grade for a plinth strip.
  • One 8 by 4 ft sheet yields about 11 strips of 100 mm, roughly 88 running feet, so a 22 ft plinth uses 25 percent of a sheet.
  • A plinth LED strip is Rs 400 per running foot in our JP Nagar kitchen guide, so a 22 ft run adds Rs 8,800.
  • Whole PVC kitchens run Rs 650 to Rs 1,100 per sq ft (Metal and More, June 2026), against Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,200 for aluminium.

Mistake 1: Leaving the Plywood Cut Edge Bare at the Floor

A laminated board has two protected faces and four raw edges. When the plinth is cut from a sheet, the long bottom edge sits against the floor, exactly where a mop leaves a film of water. Plywood draws that water up through its layers, the glue line weakens and the laminate lifts from the edge first. BWR grade, which Greenply describes as resistant to humidity and minor moisture but not prolonged contact, is the lower grade, and a plinth strip is exactly where it is tempting to use it.

Daily mopping puts water against the bottom 100 mm of every base cabinet.

The fix is a choice, not a repair. Either specify an aluminium or PVC profile for the visible plinth, or ask in writing that every cut edge of a plywood plinth be edge-banded and the bottom edge sealed before fixing. For the ply grades themselves, Greenply sets out the BWP and BWR difference in its April 2026 guide.

Mistake 2: Building the Cabinet Box on the Floor Instead of on Legs

The plinth should be a cover, never a support. The cabinet box should stand on adjustable legs, with the plinth fixed in front of them and the box bottom clear of the tile. If a carpenter builds the box straight on the floor and trims it with a plywood skirt, the carcass itself soaks up every spill.

The cabinet box should stand on legs, with the plinth acting only as a cover.

You can check this yourself before handover. With the plinth removed, you should see legs and a gap under the cabinet bottom, not a plywood side panel running to the tile. A swollen plinth on a leg-mounted cabinet is a strip to replace. A swollen carcass is a cabinet to rebuild. The same 100 mm base is built into our wardrobes, which is why the clear internal height in our wardrobe internal sizes guide starts after a 100 mm plinth.

Mistake 3: Accepting the Plinth as a Lump Sum Inside the Kitchen Price

Many quotes fold the plinth into the carcass price with no length, no material and no rate. That is how a plywood strip gets swapped in for the aluminium profile you thought you had approved. Ask for four items on one line: material, 100 mm height, measured running feet and rate per foot. Our aluminium line in the HSR Layout table reads exactly that way, 22 ft at Rs 240 per foot for Rs 5,280.

Aluminium plinth cost at Rs 240 per foot, and the plywood sheet share for the same run
Kitchen runPlinth lengthAluminium 100 mm at Rs 240 per ftShare of one 8 by 4 ply sheet cut into 100 mm strips
Single wall run10 ftRs 2,40011 percent
Short L or parallel15 ftRs 3,60017 percent
10 by 10 L kitchen, two 10 ft walls20 ftRs 4,80023 percent
Our HSR Layout kitchen quote22 ftRs 5,28025 percent
Large U kitchen30 ftRs 7,20034 percent

The second column of the table is the useful one. A plywood plinth uses a quarter of one sheet on a 22 ft run, so ask your carpenter for the sheet price and take 25 percent of it. That number is what a plywood plinth saves against Rs 5,280. For most kitchens the saving is small beside the cost of a swollen strip, but it is your number to check, and I have not guessed it here because sheet prices vary by brand and grade.

Plinth lighting belongs on the same line. Our JP Nagar kitchen guide lists a plinth LED strip at Rs 400 per running foot, which adds Rs 8,800 to a 22 ft run. For the other lines that decide a kitchen price, see our cost by layout guide and our kitchen quote exclusions guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Plinth Material

Is a BWP plywood plinth fine if it is laminated on both faces?

Only if the cut edges are also edge-banded and the bottom edge is sealed. Laminate protects the faces, not the cut ends, and BWP does not help once water enters through an unsealed edge. Aluminium or PVC avoids the question.

What height should a kitchen plinth be?

100 mm is the height we use, both for the aluminium profile in our HSR Layout table and for the wardrobe base in our wardrobe sizes guide. Adjustable legs set the final gap, so confirm the height against your floor level before cutting.

Can a swollen plinth be replaced without touching the cabinets?

Yes, when the cabinet box stands on legs, because the plinth is a separate strip fixed in front of them. If the carcass itself has soaked up water, the cabinet needs rebuilding, which is why leg-mounted boxes matter.

Does a plinth LED strip suit a wet kitchen floor?

It can, but it sits at the lowest point where water collects. Our JP Nagar kitchen guide lists a plinth LED strip at Rs 400 per running foot. Ask in writing whether the strip and its connector are splash-protected, and keep the driver off the floor.

Limitations: the Rs 240 per foot figure is one line in a published myNivasa HSR Layout table, not a quote for your kitchen. PVC and plywood figures are whole-kitchen rates from other publishers, not plinth rates. The sheet yield of 11 strips assumes 3 mm saw cuts on a 1,220 mm sheet width. Swelling behaviour is explained by how plywood absorbs water, not from a dated site record.
