Short answer: A tandem box is not the stronger drawer on paper. Dealer listings give Hettich's soft-close ball-bearing channel a 35 kg rating, against 30 kg for the InnoTech tandem box and 40 kg for ArciTech. What a tandem box adds is steel drawer sides in the kit and a concealed runner, and that is where the price jumps. For a 500 mm kitchen drawer in Bengaluru in 2026, the channel is about Rs 874 per set and a Hettich tandem box Rs 3,550 to Rs 4,500, before the ply box built around the channel. Send myNivasa your drawer list and we will price both ways.
What this guide covers
Tandem Box or Telescopic Channel: Is the Drawer Box the Real Price Difference?
A telescopic channel is a pair of rails. It sits between the cabinet side and a drawer box that your carpenter builds on site, which in our work means a 12 mm plywood box with edge banding on all four sides. A tandem box is a kit: steel side profiles with the runner built in, to which the carpenter adds a bottom and a back cut from board. Blum's brochure, for example, asks for 16 mm material for the drawer bottom and back. So the two systems do not compete rail against rail. They compete box against box.
Load ratings sit closer together than the price suggests. Hettich lists its full-extension ball-bearing runners at 35 to 45 kg with the silent system, its Quadro runners at up to 30 kg and its partial-extension ball-bearing runners at only 10 to 12 kg. Blum sells TANDEMBOX in 30 kg and 65 kg load classes. In IndiaMART dealer listings, the Hettich soft-close channel carries 35 kg at every length from 300 to 700 mm, the InnoTech tandem box 30 kg and the ArciTech 40 kg. A good soft-close channel is therefore not the weak option. The weak option is a partial-extension channel rated 10 to 12 kg.
Price is where they part. Those listings put the Hettich soft-close channel at Rs 789 per set for 300 mm, Rs 874 for 500 mm and Rs 1,188 for 700 mm, while an InnoTech tandem box at 470 mm is Rs 3,550 and an ArciTech at 500 mm is Rs 4,500. On our JP Nagar kitchen rate card, a standard 500 mm tandem drawer costs Rs 3,200 in Ebco, Rs 4,200 in Hettich and Rs 4,800 in Hafele, and the heavy versions cost Rs 4,800, Rs 6,400 and Rs 7,200.
One real job shows both systems in a single home. In our Brigade Cosmopolis study room, a 3 BHK of 1,820 sq ft finished in January 2026, the adult desk got Blum Tandembox drawers and the kids' table got Hettich Quadro hardware. The three units billed Rs 3.42 lakh including GST over 31 working days.
My observation: the carpenter's ply box is the line most quotes hide when they sell a channel as the cheap option. I will not guess its price for you, so ask for it as a separate line and compare box against box.
- Tandem box
- A kitchen drawer kit with steel side walls and a concealed runner that comes with soft close. In Bengaluru in 2026, a Hettich tandem box for a 470 to 500 mm drawer costs Rs 3,550 to Rs 4,500, against about Rs 874 for a 500 mm Hettich soft-close telescopic channel.
- Dealer listings rate the Hettich soft-close channel at 35 kg, InnoTech at 30 kg and ArciTech at 40 kg.
- A 500 mm soft-close channel is Rs 874 per set, and a tandem box is Rs 3,550 to Rs 4,500.
- Blum deducts 75 mm of width for its drawer bottom, while a side-mount channel takes 25.4 mm.
- At 40 openings a day, a 30,000 cycle channel lasts about 2.1 years and an 80,000 cycle one about 5.5 years.
- Six drawers cost Rs 5,244 on channels and Rs 21,300 on InnoTech boxes, a gap of Rs 16,056.
- Every three drawers moved from channel to InnoTech adds Rs 8,028.
Channel at Rs 874 or Tandem Box at Rs 3,550 to Rs 4,500: Which Costs Less per Drawer?
The chart below sets the two systems side by side on the six numbers that decide a kitchen drawer. The prices are 500 mm dealer listings and the cycle ratings are the ones we publish for each tier. Read the price row with one caution: the channel figure is the rails alone, while the tandem figure already includes the box sides.

| Criterion | Soft-close channel | Tandem box |
|---|---|---|
| Load rating | 35 kg | 30 to 40 kg |
| Hardware price | Rs 874 (500 mm) | Rs 3,550 to Rs 4,500 |
| Drawer box | Ply, built on site | Steel sides in the kit |
| Width deducted | 25.4 mm in all | 75 mm (Blum rule) |
| Rated cycles | 30,000 to 80,000 | 80,000 to 100,000 |
| Six drawers | Rs 5,244 | Rs 21,300 (InnoTech) |
Our JP Nagar rate card adds the warranty view. Hettich and Hafele hardware there carries 10 years, and Ebco carries 5. Those warranty terms and the Rs 3,200 to Rs 7,200 range for 500 mm tandem drawers are the numbers to hold a quotation against.

Where Does 50 mm of Drawer Width Go in a 600 mm Cabinet?
A 600 mm wide base cabinet built from 18 mm boards has a clear inside width of 564 mm. A side-mount ball-bearing channel needs half an inch, 12.7 mm, on each side, so that opening takes a drawer box 538.6 mm wide. Blum's brochure sets the TANDEMBOX drawer bottom width at the inside cabinet width minus 75 mm, which is 489 mm on the same cabinet. The two rules measure different parts of the drawer, so treat the result as a planning figure, but the gap is about 50 mm.
Because the gap is fixed, it bites harder as cabinets narrow. It is roughly 9 percent of a 564 mm opening and roughly 12 percent of a 414 mm one, which is what a 450 mm cabinet gives. Length behaves differently. Blum lists nominal lengths of 400, 450, 500 and 550 mm, while Hettich India's telescopic channels step in 50 mm from 300 to 700 mm, so a 600 mm deep carcass takes a 500 mm drawer in either system. Depth is not where the tandem box wins or loses. Width is.

How Many Years Does a 30,000 Cycle Drawer Last at 10 and at 40 Openings a Day?
Our published ratings put an Ebco standard ball-bearing channel at 30,000 cycles with a 1 year warranty, Hettich Quadro 4D soft close at 80,000 cycles with 5 years, Hettich InnoTech at 80,000 cycles with 5 years and Blum Tandembox at 100,000 cycles with a lifetime mechanical warranty. Blum's own brochure reports 100,000 open and close cycles at 75 lb, about 34 kg, on a TANDEMBOX drawer.
A rating means little until it becomes years. At 10 openings a day a drawer does 3,650 cycles a year, so 30,000 cycles lasts about 8.2 years, 80,000 about 21.9 and 100,000 about 27.4. At 40 openings a day, which is our planning assumption for a cutlery or masala drawer in a family kitchen, the yearly count is 14,600, and the same ratings last about 2.1, 5.5 and 6.8 years. The cheap channel is fine in a guest room or a wardrobe drawer opened a few times a day. In the one drawer you open 40 times a day, a 30,000 cycle part is not even a three year part, so spend there first.
What Do Six Kitchen Drawers Cost in Hardware on Each System?
Take the base run of a kitchen with six drawers and price only the hardware, using the listed 500 mm channel at Rs 874, the InnoTech tandem box at 470 mm for Rs 3,550 and the ArciTech at 500 mm for Rs 4,500. Those are the nearest lengths each maker lists.
| Specification | Working | Hardware total |
|---|---|---|
| All six on soft-close channel | 6 x Rs 874 | Rs 5,244 |
| Three tandem box, three channel | 3 x Rs 3,550 plus 3 x Rs 874 | Rs 13,272 |
| All six on InnoTech tandem box | 6 x Rs 3,550 | Rs 21,300 |
| All six on ArciTech tandem box | 6 x Rs 4,500 | Rs 27,000 |
The all-channel run is Rs 5,244 and the all-InnoTech run is Rs 21,300, a gap of Rs 16,056. Moving every group of three drawers from channel to InnoTech adds Rs 8,028, which is 3 x (Rs 3,550 minus Rs 874). These are hardware totals only. They leave out the plywood boxes that channel drawers need, the drawer fronts, handles, fitting and GST, so a channel drawer is never quite as cheap as its Rs 874 suggests.

What Do Our Study Table Jobs Show About Choosing Per Drawer?
We have no kitchen-only drawer job to quote, so the first-hand records here come from study rooms. At Salarpuria Sattva Magnus, a 2 BHK of 1,225 sq ft finished in March 2026, a 3-drawer L-shaped study table used Hettich Quadro 4D soft-close drawers and billed Rs 1.08 lakh including 18 percent GST over 19 working days. Our published guidance from those jobs is that the hardware choice alone moves a 3-drawer table's bill by Rs 6,000 to Rs 11,000, and that mixing brands between rooms creates a service problem 4 to 6 years later, when one channel fails and the dealer is no longer around.
My rule of thumb, which is a judgement and not a measurement, follows from the numbers above. Give a soft-close channel to cutlery, masala and other light drawers, especially in narrow cabinets where 50 mm of width matters. Give a tandem box to the wide drawers under the hob that carry pots and a full stack of plates, where the 40 kg ArciTech rating and the steel sides earn the extra Rs 2,700 to Rs 3,600 per drawer over a channel. Keep one brand across the kitchen so the spare part exists when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tandem Box and Drawer Channel Cost
How much does a Hettich telescopic drawer channel cost in India?
IndiaMART listings of the Hettich soft-close channel run from Rs 789 per set for 300 mm to Rs 1,188 for 700 mm, with Rs 860 for 450 mm and Rs 874 for 500 mm. Each set is a left and right pair rated 35 kg.
What load can a tandem box carry?
Dealer listings rate the Hettich InnoTech tandem box at 30 kg and the ArciTech at 40 kg. Blum sells TANDEMBOX in 30 kg and 65 kg classes. A Hettich full-extension ball-bearing channel with the silent system is rated 35 to 45 kg.
Is a tandem box worth the extra money in a Bengaluru kitchen?
For wide pot drawers under the hob, usually yes: a tandem box costs Rs 3,550 to Rs 4,500 against Rs 874 for a channel, but it brings steel sides and a 40 kg ArciTech option. For light cutlery or masala drawers a soft-close 35 kg channel does the job at lower cost.
Which tandem box brand suits which budget?
On our JP Nagar rate card a standard 500 mm tandem drawer costs Rs 3,200 in Ebco with 5 years of warranty, Rs 4,200 in Hettich and Rs 4,800 in Hafele with 10 years each. Dealer listings put Hettich InnoTech at Rs 3,550 and ArciTech at Rs 4,500.
Limitations: every price here is a 2026 dealer listing or our published rate card, never a quotation. Drawer length, load class and brand will move your own bill, so measure before you commit.
